Marcus Baseball: Since 1987
History
In 1980, the Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) opened Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound as a freshman-only campus to serve the district's rapidly growing western sector. Marcus was the second high school in LISD; previously all students attended Lewisville High School. As Marcus students became upperclassmen, they went back across town to finish their studies and ultimately graduated from LHS.
So in its early years, Marcus Baseball was a JV-only program, though the team played an occasional varsity tournament. According to the school's 1985-1986 yearbook, Marcus was the largest two-year high school in the nation at the time.
Under Head Baseball Coach Ron Laughlin, the first varsity baseball team in Marcus history took the field - finally with juniors but still no seniors - in the spring of 1987. One year later, Marcus won the district baseball championship.
The school gradually added grade levels and graduated its charter class in 1988.
Long-time LHS JV Baseball Coach Jeff Harp became the Head Baseball Coach at Marcus in 1994. In his decade with the Marauders, Coach Harp led the program to three playoff seasons, including a Regional Quarter-Finals appearance in 1997.
The school's athletic talent was split in 2000 when Flower Mound's second high school, Flower Mound High School, established its athletic program. But by 2005, Marcus Coach Frank Chumbley once again led the Marauders to the Regional Quarter-Finals.
The Marauders finally captured the Regional Semi-Finals Championship in 2009 under Coach Art Senato, and continued even deeper in the playoffs to the Regional Finals. In 2010, the Marauders returned to the playoffs, ending the season as Regional Semi-Finalists.
Today, Marcus is one of five high schools in the LISD. With an enrollment of almost 2,900, it is in the state's largest high school classification of 5A. In 2010-2011, Marcus will compete in Texas Region 1, District 8-5A.
Legacy of Winners
When Head Baseball Coach Dustin Sykora assumed leadership of the Marcus Baseball program in Fall 2010, he declared that "We will be committed to working as hard as ever to accomplish our ultimate goal of winning the 5A State Championship."
